What is Bhastrika Pranayama | The Yogic Breath of Fire

Bhastrika Pranayama, also known as Bhastrika Pranayama Yoga, is the rapid rhythm of breathing where one inhales and exhales quickly and heavily several times in quick succession. Bhastrika Pranayama derives its name from the Sanskrit word bhastra, which translates to bellows or fans and therefore describes the action of this pranayama. This pranayama has a number of benefits including boosting energy levels, burning fat, detoxifying the system, and improving heart health as well as respiratory health.

Bhastrika means blowpipe. In this pranayama, the movement of the breath becomes like a blowpipe. That is, doing the process of breathing quickly is called Bhastrika Pranayama.

Types Of Pranayama

There are various types of pranayama, which differ from each other in terms of breathing patterns and ways. Two of these are Nadi Shodhana or Anuloma Viloma and Bhastrika Pranayama. Here we’ll learn about bhastrika pranayama.

First of all, sit in Sukhasan. Keeping the waist, neck, back, and spine straight, keep the body absolutely stable.
After this, without moving the body, make a sound from both the nostrils and inhale. Then exhale while making a sound.
Now inhale and exhale while making a loud sound. This action is called Bhastrika Pranayama. Both our hands will remain on the knees in the posture of knowledge and the eyes will remain closed.
Keep in mind that our rhythm should not be broken while inhaling and exhaling.

Benefits and Effects of Bhastrika Pranayama:

Obesity is removed by the practice of this pranayama.
Our body gets a lot of breath and carbon-di-oxide comes out of the body.
This pranayama purifies the blood.
There is good circulation of blood to all the parts of the body.
Gastritis intensifies.
Asthma, TB, and respiratory diseases are cured.
The lungs get strength.
The nervous system is strong.
Doshas of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are removed.
It massages the digestion, liver, and kidneys.


High blood pressure, heart patients, hernia, ulcers, epileptic stroke, and pregnant women should not practice it in Bhastrika Pranayama.

How Long Should We Practice Bhastrika Pranayama?

There are no hard and fast rules as to how long we should practice Bhastrika Pranayama. The real-time duration of effective, efficient, and healthy practice varies from person to person. For example, a senior or a seasoned practitioner of yoga can do it for more time than an average individual. If you are practicing it for weight loss, I would recommend that you start with 5 rounds and then slowly increase it to 15 rounds per day at least.
